This is the 141st year of the International Trademark Association annual meeting. Each year brand owners and professionals from around the world come together to show off their branded trademarks or their exclusive intellectual property. Trademarks have become a very important aspect in the business world ever since the first one was issued back in 1870. It was for a UK based brewery company called Bass and Co’s Pale Ales. This trademark has started the revolution that has lead us to the immense world of business that we live in today.
What Are Trademarks and Why Are They So Important?
Trademarks account for nearly $12 Trillion USD to the global GDP annually. But what are they? Trademarks are usually a recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others. One classic example of a trademark would be the McDonald’s golden arches. No matter where you are, when you see those golden arches you know it has something to do with McDonald’s.
Once your brand or logo is trademarked no one else can use it besides yourself. This would be the same with intellectual property. If you have trademarked any ideas no one else can use them besides the one who trademarked them. The only way to use someone else’s property would be to purchase rights from the owner. There are 4 main types of intellectual property. These are Trademarks, Patents, Copyrights, and Trade secrets. A trademark specifically protects your brand. This would be like the McDonald’s Golden Arches. The trademark protects McDonald’s from anyone that wants to steal any part of the McDonald’s logo. A patent is made to protect a functional or ornamental feature.
One example of this would be the patent on Monopoly. Monopoly has become probably the most well known board game of all time. It was patented back in 1935 so no other company could take their idea for the game. Copyrights are proposed to protect work of authorship. They can most often be found on songs, movies, and books. Trade secrets are brought about to protect any secret information from others. Some examples of this would be the formula for Coca Cola or the google search algorithm.
All different types of intellectual property will be exhibiting here at the BCEC. INTA members from around the world will gather together for this one large annual event. They will discuss business propositions with one another and think of how they can advance their ideas even farther to obtain even more success.
